More about Me

I am a senior interventional cardiologist who performs high risk and complex coronary intervention. My specialist interest is coronary intervention for patients who cannot have or choose not to have open-heart surgery. I have perfected the use of the latest techniques and devices to treat difficult coronary blockages of any level.
I also implant pacemakers with the latest techniques which minimise risk and allows full independence and ambulation of the patient hours after the procedure.
After being awarded the SSR national scholarship in 2001 (1st laureate, science side), I went on to complete my undergraduate medical education at the University of Manchester and my Internal medicine and Interventional Cardiology training in the North West of the UK.
I have been heavily involved in undergraduate and postgraduate medical education at the Universities of Manchester and Liverpool and therefore gained recognition as a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. I was a lecturer and clinical tutor at both universities.
I have now returned to my country under the national diaspora scheme to share my expertise and help elevate the cardiac treatment offered to my fellow citizens.

“Ou La Vie, Ou Le Corps, Ou La Sante, Ou Decision”

I am a great believer in innovation and progress in the world of coronary artery treatment. I continue to keep up to date and I strive to bring the expertise I have amassed from UK to Mauritius. I have introduced novel treatments to our island to help our patients have a choice of treatment options.

All of the below novel treatments give our patients options in their decision-making. Cardiac patients need to understand that both stents and bypass grafts fail over time. Coronary disease has a tendency to return, and we can offer multiple and repeated procedures to help our patients in the long term. What is more important is to implement lifestyle changes and stay committed to the medications which minimise future blockages.

Procedures

Multivessel stenting

It is a procedure where we place stents in multiple places or multiple arteries. In the past, open-heart surgery has been the only solution for this. However, with the recent advances in high precision stenting, we can offer options of minimally invasive procedures to place stents in these arteries. This is an alternative open-heart surgery in patients who are not candidates for surgery. It is also an option we can offer to our patients who do not wish to have open-heart surgery.

Drug coated or Drug eluting balloons

They are new treatments that are offered to patients with small and narrowed arteries where stents cannot be placed. Sometimes arteries are so small that stents would damage them. These new balloons contain a similar drug to stents and help open up the artery. It allows the proper healing of the artery to improve blood flow to the heart muscle.

CTO

A CTO is a chronic total occlusion. This type of 100% coronary blockage was previously only treated with open-heart surgery. With the recent advances in specialised techniques, even these completely blocked arteries can now be treated by minimally invasive techniques.

The required specialized equipment such as wires, microcatheters and balloons are now available to unblock these arteries
and place stents without the need for open heart surgery.

IVUS (intravascular ultrasound)

I performed the 1 st IVUS case in Wellkin in 2024. It consists of a camera which is inserted into a person’s coronary artery to help plan the placement of stents. It makes the procedure more accurate and precise. This increases the success rate of the stent and allows the cardiologist to understand the anatomy in more detail before the planned stent treatment. It is particularly useful in the treatment of Left Main Coronary disease.

Rotapro

I performed the 1 st Rotapro case in The Cardiac Centre in 2024. This brand new device has a diamond tipped drill with moves at 170,000 rotations per minute as it burrows through the coronary artery. It allows crossing and treatment of coronary calcium. As it drills through the coronary blockage, it clears the blockage and breaks down the calcium, which is then eliminated from the body. It helps the cardiologist navigate through hard occlusions which would have not been able to be treated by other means. It shortens the procedure and improves the long term success rates of stent placement.

Orbital Atherectomy

I performed the 1 st Orbital Atherectomy case in Wellkin in 2024. It is a device which uses a diamond covered crown to eat away at calcium which sits on the inside of the coronary artery. This then facilitates the opening up of the artery and helps insert stents in arteries. This technique helps treating patients without the need for open heart surgery.
